Why should I get professional newborn photos? Can't I just take pictures myself?
You absolutely can and you should! Moms and Dads take fabulous photos of their little ones because they see them like no one else does. That being said, most Moms and Dads don't have the time or the patience to pose baby just so and to edit all of those images. Similarly, in those first hazy days of parenthood, it's hard to focus on pictures when feeding, sleeping, and cuddling are so all consuming. Allowing a professional to take care of the pictures allows you to focus on being present with your new baby instead of constantly looking through a lens trying to capture the "perfect" shot.
If you really can't hire a photographer, get as many photos as you can! Those early days pass by very quickly and you will certainly want to remember the incredible smallness and newness of you child as they grow. Even if you aren't feeling great, get in the shot with your baby. There is nothing more treasured then those first few photos and I promise you, you will regret it if you wait to feel better before taking pictures with your baby.
Do I have to do anything before a newborn/baby photo shoot? What if I don't feel so great after I give birth? Do I have to/can I participate?
I've been there. I won't ask you to do anything you aren't up to. The best part about my newborns sessions is that I come to you! No need to even get out of your pajamas if you don't want to.
Ideally, your pre-interview will be done long before our session. All you have to do on the day of our shoot is crank up the heat (if you can) to keep baby warm and snuggly for our session and feed baby so she is full and as relaxed as possible. That's it. I will bring everything I need, set it up, and clean it up. During the session you can participate as much or as little as you like.
Feedings, diaper changes, and comforting can happen as often as needed. There is no need for you to feel like you aren't "doing it right" in front of me. I remember the early days very well and will do everything in my power to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. This isn't just a photo session for baby, it's one of the first experiences you have as a new family and I want it to be a pleasant one!
What's a pre-interview?
It's the conversation we have in person, online, or over the phone to get to know one another. You can ask me anything you want and tell me what you are looking for. I will ask you a few questions so that I know what kinds of images you like. It can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as an hour- it's up to you!
When should I book a session?
For older babies, we can book anytime you decide you're ready!
For newborns, it's best to book before you give birth. This puts me on call for the period around your due date. Once baby is born, you can let me know and we will get you scheduled. If you don't book before your birth, contact me anyway! You never know when I'll have an opening in my calendar and a late cancellation may work in your favor.
Newborns are best captured between 5-10 days. Up to 14 days is ok too but the further we get from that 10 day mark, the less sleepy and snuggly they are. Trust me when I say, newborns change fast! It's best to catch them in this window so that we can capture their newness in all it's glory.
Which package should I choose?
Each package has it's benefits. The Complete Digital Session is the best value because it gives you a minimum of 25 digital images to print and share as much as you want. Given the regular price ($50/per image) and value of individual digital images, this is a great deal. That being said, some clients really want finished products- albums, wall art, prints- so the A La Carte Session is a better option for them. Some people just want a quick and easy session to capture a few beautiful shots, so the mini-session will be right for them. It's really up to you!
Do you ever do sessions outside of NYC? Do you do sessions for older children/families/etc.?
Yes and yes! Contact me with special requests.
